I embraced atheism last year and I'm now living back in the bible belt. I'd like to find more people with your slant on Christian ethics. I still look toward the gospels as an example of how we should treat one another. I wish more people would think more about carving the Beatitudes on a 2 ton block of granite outside a courthouse as opposed to the ten commandments. Judaism is the senior western culture of the earth, most stimulative of the left hemisphere, and Catholicism is the senior western culture of the hidden world, the right hemisphere. I believe the answer lies in balancing these two influences in our personalities - with some attention as well to our primal R-complex - which I call trifurcism. An emersion in Athiesm forces you to ask the question, "what about Christianity am I missing", and you start to get the feeling that you have thrown the baby out with the bathwater. To have been raised in a blended family of these two powerful cultures was a gift.
